About this course

Our emotional experiences are closely connected to the nervous system. Anxiety, stress, irritability, grief, and low mood are not just “feelings”. They reflect real physiological changes in the body, including shifts in heart rate, breathing patterns, stress hormones, and brain activity.

In this two-part course, we’ll explore how aromatherapy can be used as a supportive tool for emotional regulation.

You’ll learn how scent communicates directly with the limbic system, the area of the brain involved in emotion, memory, and the stress response, and how specific essential oil constituents can help calm heightened states or gently uplift heavier ones.

This class blends approachable science with practical application so you can confidently choose and use essential oils in ways that align with your emotional needs.

Course Outline

Week 1 – Heightened Emotional States (90-minute class)

Focus: Calming the Overactive:

Essential oils for heightened states such as stress, anxiety, and anger

In week 1 we will explore:

  • What happens in the body during fight-or-flight

  • How stress and anxiety affect the nervous system

  • Essential oils traditionally used to promote calm and grounding

  • How different aromatic constituents support relaxation

  • Evidence-based research of utilizing aromatherapy for heightened emotional states

  • Safe, practical ways to use essential oils during emotionally intense moments


Week 2 – Stagnant or Depleted Emotional States (90-minute class)

Focus: Lifting the Weary

Essential oil for supporting stagnant states such as grief, sadness, and low mood

This week we will explore:

  • What emotional heaviness looks like physiologically

  • The difference between calming and uplifting support

  • The powerful impact of memory scent associations during stagnant emotional states

  • Essential oils that encourage clarity, brightness, and gentle activation

  • How to utilize essential oils for different stages of grief and loss

  • Thoughtful blending strategies for low-energy states

  • Simple scent rituals to support emotional steadiness

Emotions move in cycles. Sometimes fast and intense, sometimes slow and heavy. In this class, you will learn how to utilize aromatherapy to support your nervous system with greater awareness and gentleness. I'm Holly, Registered Nurse and Certified Aromatherapist living near Seattle, Washington on my family farm. I received my Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing in 2006 from Marquette University and have worked in a variety of nursing specialties including trauma,burns, post-surgical, endoscopy and hospital administration. I discovered aromatherapy in 2015 and loved how aromatherapy can strengthen the mind-body connection and initiate a relaxation response.  I became a Certified Clinical Aromatherapist and have been expanding my education ever since through specialized courses in utilizing aromatics for stress, trauma, and emotional wellbeing. I am also Certified in Aromapsychology.

I am the founder of Science of Essentials, an online educational platform providing aromatherapy and holistic health education worldwide. I am the author of the bestselling book Aroma Alchemy, available worldwide, where I teach others how to use aromatherapy with confidence and intention. I also teach aromatherapy certification courses through The School for Aromatic Studies and currently collaborate with hospital systems to bring aromatherapy to the bedside in support of patient care. My deepest desire is to share the knowledge I’ve gained by bridging modern medicine and holistic health to serve and support others.

The framework of aromatherapy looks at the whole person with the goal of attaining optimal physical, mental, emotional and spiritual health; not just the absence of disease.
